Ports
Ensuring the safety of travellers and the efficiency of the international transport system
90% of India’s trade is done through the Maritime and Shipping route. Ports thus assume a significant role from point of view of the countries economy as well as from the National Security perspective being the key access points in the Country’s territorial integrity.
In recent years and especially after 9/11, enhanced Security measures have been effected in all the Ports with the signing of the ISPS (international Shipping and Port Security Code) in 2003.
PORT SECURITY
- Port Security covers the ambit of defence, Law enforcement and Counterterrorism activities that fall within the port and maritime boundary
- Its domain include protection of the Ports and infrastructure and inspection of the Cargo
- Apart from thefts and loses due to pilferage of Cargo containers, the most serious concern is Port vulnerability to Terror attacks
- Private Security Agencies are currently deployed for prevention of Cargo thefts, Container protection, Traffic management and protection of Port assets
- Following 26/11 intelligence agencies have warned of possibilities of sea borne attack by terrorists particularly in coastal areas of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala etc. thus security of ports has assumed a higher dimension
